English city guide

Playgrounds in Aarhus
by district, age and equipment

Aarhus has invested heavily in playground design over the past decade and the result is a compact city packed with high-quality, free public playgrounds. This is the English-language guide to where to find them - mapped, filtered and ready to use.

Why Aarhus

Denmark's second city, with serious playground ambitions

Aarhus is compact, flat and cycle-friendly - the entire city sits within a 15-minute bike ride of itself. That makes it perfect for families combining multiple playgrounds in a single morning. While Copenhagen attracts most international attention for urban design, Aarhus has been quietly outpacing the capital on playground density per capita.

Since 2018 Aarhus Municipality has applied a "biodiversity-first" approach to all new playgrounds: more planting, fewer flat surfaces, and a stronger emphasis on natural materials. The result is a city full of playgrounds that feel like miniature parks, not pre-fab kit installations.

By district

The best playgrounds in Aarhus, neighbourhood by neighbourhood

A curated selection covering all major Aarhus districts and the most-visited family destinations.

Aarhus C / city centre

  • Botanisk Have - nature playground in a park setting, ideal for ages 3-10.
  • Mølleparken - compact, central, with good benches for parents.
  • Vennelystparken - classic park with refreshed playground.
  • Mindeparken - multiple zones, the popular weekend destination.

Risskov & northern suburbs

Risskov Skov contains one of the best nature playgrounds in the entire Aarhus area. Easy car access, good parking, and the most genuinely nature-based site in the region.

  • Risskov Strandpark - beach plus playground, unbeatable in summer.
  • Risskov Skovlegeplads - nature playground at the forest edge.
  • Egå Engsø - nature park with informal play zones.

Aarhus V & Brabrand

  • Brabrand Sø - lake-loop path with playgrounds along the way.
  • Hasle Bakker - rolling artificial hills, a playground in their own right.
  • Skanseparken - modern installation from 2023.

Aarhus Ø & the harbour

The new Aarhus Ø district has integrated playgrounds into its master plan from day one. Modern architectural installations, often with harbour views - perfect for parents who want to combine coffee and play.

  • Modern multi-age sites along the harbour promenade.
  • Ground-level installations with sea views.
  • Adjacent cafés make this a go-to for slower mornings.

A bit further out

Within 30 minutes by car or bike from central Aarhus, several family destinations combine nature, culture and serious playground time.

  • Moesgaard Strand - beach and museum in one trip.
  • Marselisborgskoven - multiple nature playgrounds in the forest.
  • Tilst Skovlegeplads - the suburbs' favourite, free and well-maintained.

Pro tip: get a cargo bike. Aarhus is flat and cycle-friendly, with bike paths leading right up to most playground entrances. With kids in a cargo bike or a bike seat you can comfortably hit three playgrounds in a single morning. The Danish original of this guide goes deeper: Legepladser i Aarhus (in Danish).

Narrow down to the right Aarhus playground

Combine filters to drill down. Looking for a forest playground in Aarhus suitable for a 5-year-old with shade and a café nearby? That is one search. Looking for a wheelchair-accessible park playground with toilets? That is another.

Practical

Getting around Aarhus with kids

The bike is king

Aarhus is flat and cycle-friendly. Most playgrounds have bike paths right to the entrance. Cargo bikes or kid seats let you cover three playgrounds in one morning.

Use the Letbane

The Aarhus Letbane (light rail) connects the centre to Risskov, Lystrup and beyond. All trains are step-free and pram-accessible. Children under 12 travel free with an adult.

Parking is easier

Compared with Copenhagen, free or cheap parking near playgrounds is far easier in Aarhus - especially in Risskov, Marselisborg and Brabrand. Driving is a viable option here.

Plan for indoor backup

When rain runs three days in a row, Joyland in Tilst and Trampolinpark Aarhus are the local indoor go-tos. Both are pay-to-enter but worth it on a wet weekend.

Install Legepladsfinder as an app

While you're cycling around Aarhus, install the platform to your phone home screen. No App Store - just a one-tap install from your browser. See the install guide.
